Why Euro 5 trucks are being sold
London’s Low Emission Zone requires lorries over 3.5 tonnes to meet Euro VI. A lorry that doesn’t pays a daily charge: £100 a day if it meets the older Euro IV particulate standard, and £300 a day if it doesn’t. A growing number of English city Clean Air Zones charge older HGVs too, and Scotland’s Low Emission Zones in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee hand out penalty charges to them. For operators running into these areas, an older truck can quickly become uneconomic.
Which trucks are affected
Euro VI became the standard for new heavy trucks in 2014, so most HGVs registered before then are Euro 5 or older. Check your registration document or the manufacturer’s plate if you’re not sure, or just send us the registration and we’ll check for you.
Why we still want them
Outside UK city zones, Euro 5 and older trucks are perfectly good working vehicles. Many export markets prefer them, because they’re simpler to maintain without AdBlue systems and diesel particulate filters. So we can often pay more than you’d expect for a truck that’s become a problem here. See selling for export.
