The trucks exportbuyers want.

A truck that’s hard to sell in the UK can be exactly what an overseas buyer is looking for. Here’s why, and which trucks do best.

Updated 22 October 2026 by the Breaker Commercials buying team

Why UK trucks go abroad

UK operators replace trucks regularly, and emissions rules push older ones out of cities. Many export markets work differently. They value trucks that are strong, simple and easy to repair with widely available parts, and they don’t need the latest emissions technology. Right-hand-drive UK trucks are also a natural fit in countries that drive on the left.

Types that tend to sell well

  • Construction rigids: six and eight-wheel tippers, especially double-drive, plus mixers and grabs
  • Tractor units with strong engines and robust gearboxes
  • Specialist trucks such as tankers and recovery trucks
  • Older trucks with simpler electronics, which are easier to keep running far from a main dealer

Makes and models

Older Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Scania, DAF and MAN trucks have a strong following abroad, because parts are easy to find and mechanics know them well. Earlier generations, such as older Actros, FM and FH, P and R series Scanias, DAF CF and XF, and MAN TGA, are typical examples. Demand changes over time, so the best way to find out is to ask.

Condition matters differently

Export buyers are often less worried about cosmetic condition, high mileage or a missing UK test, and more interested in a sound chassis, engine and driveline. That’s why a truck that would struggle to sell here can still fetch a fair price for export.

What it means for you

You don’t need to know anything about export to benefit. Sell to a buyer with export customers and the export value is reflected in your offer. See selling a truck for export.
