1. Know what you’re selling
Gather the basics: registration, make and model, year, mileage, gearbox, axle layout and body type. Your V5C and plating certificate show most of this. If you’re not sure of the spec, a good buyer can look it up from the registration.
2. Decide how to sell
You can sell privately, through an auction, by part-exchanging with a dealer or direct to a buyer like us. Each has trade-offs on price, speed and hassle. Our guide to auction, dealer or direct compares them.
3. Get a valuation
Take good photos and be honest about faults. You’ll get a more reliable offer and fewer surprises later.
4. Get the paperwork ready
You’ll need the V5C, and ideally the plating certificate, the current test certificate, service records and any lifting equipment certificates. If there’s finance outstanding, get a settlement figure from the lender. Our paperwork guide has the full list.
5. Inspection and final price
A serious buyer will want to see the truck before committing. With us, the final price is agreed in writing once we’ve inspected the vehicle and checked the documents.
6. Payment and collection
Make sure the money is in your account before the truck leaves. With us, you’re paid the same day the price is agreed, and we arrange collection.
7. After the sale
- Tell DVLA you’ve sold the vehicle. If you sell to a motor trader, you can do it online with the 11-digit reference from your V5C. Any vehicle tax is cancelled and full months are refunded.
- Remove the truck from your operator’s licence using the Vehicle Operator Licensing service.
- Download the tachograph data from the vehicle unit before it goes, and keep it with your records.
- Cancel or transfer the insurance, and take off any private plate before the sale if you want to keep it.
