Typical timescales
- Private sale: often several weeks, sometimes months for specialist or older trucks
- Auction: usually a few weeks, from entering the truck to the sale and payment
- Dealer part-exchange: tied to when your new truck arrives
- Direct buyer: often a few days from first contact to payment and collection
What slows a sale down
- Missing paperwork: a lost V5C or unclear ownership
- Outstanding finance: waiting for a settlement figure and payoff
- Poor photos or vague details, which lead to questions and re-quotes
- Access problems: a truck that’s hard to reach on a site or blocked in at a yard
- Unrealistic expectations about price
How to sell faster
- Have the registration, mileage and V5C ready
- Take the right photos in one go
- Be upfront about faults
- Sort any finance settlement early
- Make sure the truck can be reached for inspection and collection
Why speed matters
A truck that’s parked up still costs money: insurance, yard space, and in some cases tax and operator licence capacity. It also tends to lose value while it sits, as batteries go flat, tyres perish and the market moves on. If you know it has to go, selling sooner is usually better.
